What is P&A Fuse on Harley-Davidson Motorcycles?

Blog

If you’re wondering what the hell the P&A fuse is on your Harley Davidson motorcycle, here we’ve tried to answer for you. Often found under the seat, this fuse box is accessed by unscrewing a bolt on the back of the seat. If you can’t locate the fuse box, you can look under the left side cover to see if you can access it.

What is it actually?

It is an ignition fuse dedicated for parts and accessories – heated grips, heated seats, air ride seats etc. go on that circuit. It prevents shorts by breaking a connection between two electrical devices that draw more than permitted amp from the battery. Size of the fuse will depend on what you’re hooking to the P&A connection. Generally H-D engines have 2 separate P&A fuses – one is powered on the accessories while the other is powered only on the ignition side.

Mini blade fuse

How to replace the Mini blade fuse on Harley-Davidson motorcycles? The answer to this question may surprise you. The simplest way to replace a blown fuse is to check its location. The blown fuse should have soot on the case or a thin, broken wire. Fortunately, it is very easy to replace them yourself, and they come with an easy-to-use fuse puller. Plus, you’ll be doing your part for the environment!

There are several types of fuses. Some motorcycles come with mini blade fuses, which are 7.5 A, 10 A, 15 A, or 20 A fuses. When installing a new mini blade fuse, make sure you read the manual carefully. Make sure you know the size and voltage ratings of the fuses. Otherwise, you may end up damaging your motorcycle’s engine. To fix the problem, follow these simple steps.

The fuse is located at the fuse block. On Harley-Davidson motorcycles, the fuse block is located under the fairing attached to the frame. You can easily access the fuses by finding the fuse block under the fairing. You’ll find the Mini blade fuse next to the main switch. Typically, the mini blade fuse is the smaller of the two types. Once you’ve found it, you’ll need to replace the fuses and reconnect the electrical system.

Main circuit breaker

The main circuit breaker on your Harley protects the entire electrical system. It prevents shorts by breaking a connection between two electrical devices that draw more than 30 Amps from the battery. Your battery is capable of providing up to 200 Amps. In the event of a dead short, the breaker breaks the connection automatically. If the short continues, the breaker repeatedly remakes the connection and melts the fuse.

To access the circuit breaker, unscrew the battery clamp and pull it away from the motorcycle’s frame. Then, unscrew the keps nut on the copper post. Disconnect the EFI power wire and the voltage regulator output wire. The main power wire is the thickest wire in this assembly. Next, unscrew the Keps nuts that secure the circuit breaker to the copper post.

If you notice that your breaker is constantly opening after a quarter crank, it’s likely that it’s not a bad part. But sometimes, the breaker can be tripped for non-strength load conditions. In this case, the circuit breaker may have been reset incorrectly. If this happens, the reverse motor will not operate. The reverse lamp will illuminate in your instrument cluster but the bike won’t move in reverse.

Accessory switch

In order to operate the auxiliary driving lights and accessory lighting, you must first turn on the switch in the handlebars. The handlebar switch is a black clamp with a rubber switch that’s a direct replacement for the OEM half. This switch fits on both sides of the handlebar controls and is compatible with most 1996-2020 Harley-Davidson(r) Models. It’s important to note that this switch may not fit all models, so check the manual before purchase to ensure compatibility.
